Phyllis Joyner is the second of five daughters born to Percy and Dorothy Joyner, who were married for 62 years and sacrificed by working multiple jobs to ensure that their children’s needs and some wants were met. She is the mother of one daughter, Dakya D. Sims, who has a strong foundation in Blackness thanks to a supportive family, church, and community. Dakya participated in a formal 6-month Rites of Passage program for Black adolescent girls while attending Hillside High School, which equipped her with the confidence and life skills to navigate in a corporate culture. She is a Howard University alumna who currently resides in Georgia.
Phyllis’s education, from kindergarten through her undergraduate matriculation, took place in a Black environment, which more than prepared her to obtain two advanced degrees. Her Blackness and academic accomplishments are a celebration of Black teachers and professors who have made a significant impact on her life and the lives of countless others.
Dream for Black Children
“I dream that children are wanted, loved, and given the opportunity to be exposed to a community of peace and live and be nurtured in peace. They are stripped of negative labels and instilled with pride in themselves, family, and community. Lastly, they have access to open doors to become the great person who is equipped to reach their highest potential!“
