Damon Walker is a devoted father (both adoptive and biological), husband, and homeschooling parent to his two daughters. He is also a performing musician, contrabass instructor, master luthier, and successful business owner.
His educational journey is diverse, including studies in English and Architecture at SUNY Delhi, Architecture at Pratt Institute, Mainframe Programming at ASA Business, and Business at Phoenix University. Beyond academia, Damon refined his passions for woodworking, design, and bass instruments through apprenticeships with renowned luthiers David Gage, Kolstein & Son, and Viseltear & Young Violin, earning him the moniker “Dr. Bass.” In 2014, Damon founded Dr. Bass String Instrument Repair, Rental, & Sales in Durham, NC, swiftly establishing it as a beloved local hub for music enthusiasts across the Triangle area and beyond.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Damon is known for his love of hats and colorful and creative socks, which complement his distinctive personal style. Fluent in English, Spanish, and Japanese, he is also skilled in unicycling and juggling—talents that help keep him balanced in all aspects of life.
Damon’s upbringing in the child welfare system taught him resilience, instilled confidence, and ignited his belief in the transformative power of education. His commitment to homeschooling his daughters reflects his dedication to nurturing their intellectual curiosity and aligning their learning with their needs and aspirations. Damon’s efforts, however, extend beyond his own family, as he advocates for empowering and uplifting all Black children by fostering culturally affirming learning environments.
