Interest Awareness

Think about your child’s interests as being many activities, talents, skills, or objects. To complete the interest portion of their profile, think about things they are drawn to and love to do. The idea is that by knowing what their interests are, you and other adults can nurture their exposure and growth in their interests.

Racial Identity

Next, when thinking about your child’s racial identity, consider how aware they are of what it means to be Black and how they feel about being Black. If your child is still developing a sense of racial identity or does not have the most positive perception of Blackness currently, it’s important to be honest about this as it helps to understand what can help them develop racial pride.

Due to racism and other systemic issues, your child is likely to experience challenges to their achievement with both their talents/hobbies and academics. Therefore, it is important that you, your village, and other adults understand how your child is best supported to persist and overcome challenges to reach their personal, social, and academic goals.

Your child’s talents and interests are likely to expose them to new and unfamiliar environments and cultures which they’ll have to learn to cope with in ways that are the least stressful for them. Consider how your child adapts to unfamiliar environments.

Selective Trust

Racial bias and other types of injustices have a way of affecting Black youth at the hands of people who have good intentions but fail to understand how their actions or words can be harmful. This means that your child must be able to make decisions about who to trust and re-examine these relationships throughout their lives. Reflect on who your child trusts and how they would know who to trust outside of your presence.
